This extraordinary penthouse in Barcelona redefines what it means to live without compromise in one of Europe's most beloved cities. Oriented to the southeast, the residence captures the full arc of Mediterranean light from dawn through golden hour - flooding its generous interiors with warmth while framing panoramic 360-degree views of the Collserola mountains, the dense urban tapestry of Barcelona, and the shimmer of the distant sea. Our studio approached this project as a dialogue between heritage and contemporary luxury: the discipline of Catalan building tradition meeting the desires of a sophisticated owner who entertains generously, rests deeply, and lives beautifully.
Spatial organisation
The principal floor opens with an elegant entrance hall that leads, without hesitation, into a grand living and dining room conceived for gatherings of fourteen - a space where family rituals and formal hospitality coexist with equal grace. The chef's kitchen is a serious proposition: fully equipped with state-of-the-art appliances, a dedicated wine cellar, a central island, and a breakfast bar that invites the informal morning as warmly as the elaborate dinner. A pantry and laundry complete the service sequence. Three magnificent en-suite bedrooms - each with built-in wardrobes and sumptuous bathrooms - extend along a private corridor, while the principal suite adds a generous dressing room, a bathroom with sauna, and direct access to the lower terrace of 80 sqm. A fully equipped pub bar with television, a games room, and a singular volta catalana vaulted space with full-height glazing and its own bathroom offer versatile leisure scenarios - ideal as a private office or repurposed entirely to the new owner's wishes. The upper floor houses a professional gym, a rest zone, and a guest suite or studio, all ascending toward the spectacular rooftop terrace garden that crowns the entire composition.
Materials and climate
hydraulic cement tiles
Our studio specified hydraulic cement tiles for the outdoor terrace surfaces - their geometric patterning a direct reference to the Barcelona finca regia tradition - paired with Girona limestone for planters, seating walls, and the structural pergola base. Internally, subtle textures and restrained palettes work alongside high ceilings to amplify the sensation of space and luminosity. The outdoor kitchen millwork is finished in dark-stained timber with a concrete island, grounding the rooftop in material honesty. Pendant lighting and ceiling fans beneath the steel pergola extend the usable outdoor season well across the full seven months - April through October - that the Mediterranean climate generously offers.
Style
The project reads as Mediterranean Minimalism — simplicity, natural light, texture over colour, and the indoor-outdoor flow that defines the great Mediterranean house. The palette holds to white, sand, terracotta, olive, and sea blue; the materials to lime plaster, natural wood (oak, olive), linen, terracotta, and natural stone. The discipline is in what is left out: no cluttered accessorising, no heavy curtains, no dark walls, never the clinical Scandinavian-white finish imported over local tile. The regional sub-style reads as Balearic white-and-sand — limewashed walls, bare stone or sisal floors, linen — calibrated to the specific light of the site.

Bioclimatic strategy

Barcelona's Csa climate - hot dry summers, mild wet winters - shaped every passive decision we made. The southeast orientation maximises solar gain through winter while the deep pergola overhang and exterior motorised blinds intercept high summer sun before it reaches the glazing. Cross-ventilation is organised through the sequence of terraces on both levels, drawing cooler air from the lower shaded terrace through the living spaces and exhausting heat at roof level. The volta catalana ceiling vaulted space, with its thermal mass and elevated geometry, naturally moderates internal temperatures in a technique rooted in centuries of Catalan building intelligence. Planters positioned along the parapet buffer wind and contribute passive evaporative cooling during peak summer heat.
Energy and sustainability
The project meets full CTE DB-HE compliance - Spain's technical building code for energy efficiency - with enhanced insulation values across all roof and facade assemblies. Primary heating and cooling is delivered by an aerothermal heat pump system, which extracts renewable energy from outdoor air and operates at high efficiency across the mild Barcelona temperature range. This system feeds underfloor heating on the principal floor and supplies the sauna in the master bathroom, consolidating all thermal comfort into a single low-carbon circuit. Solar shading systems are integrated across all south and east elevations as part of the energy certification strategy.
Landscape
The rooftop garden is its own ecosystem - a lush perimeter of subtropical planting including tree ferns, bird-of-paradise, banana palms, and Mediterranean succulents that creates privacy, filters the urban horizon, and brings genuine softness to the architecture. Our studio worked with the local planting palette to ensure year-round green structure, with flowering species providing seasonal colour from spring through autumn. The artificial lawn panel at terrace level, visible in the project imagery, offers a barefoot-friendly social surface that connects the outdoor kitchen counter and bar stools to the lounge seating - effortlessly, as though the boundary between cooking and conversation had never existed.
In this penthouse, luxury is expressed not in excess but in proportion, in the quality of morning light, and in the silence that follows a perfect evening.
