Apartment in respectable Barcelona neighborhood of Sarria San Gervasi
Location: Barcelona, Spain . GFA: 550 sqm

Architectural concept
Sarria-Sant Gervasi
This exceptional residence occupies the upper floors of a distinguished finca regia in the Sarria-Sant Gervasi district - one of the most coveted residential addresses in Barcelona, set above Placa Francesc Macia within walking distance of Turo Parc and the quiet elegance of Carrer Doctor Fleming. Our studio was invited by a discerning client - a cosmopolitan family who divides their year between Barcelona and abroad - to transform a generous 550 sqm shell into a home that is simultaneously intimate and spectacular, rooted in Catalan tradition yet entirely contemporary in its ambitions. The project became, in our hands, a conversation between heritage and innovation, between the warmth of local craft and the precision of modern material science.

Spatial organisation
The plan resolves itself around a clear separation of day and night territories, each with its own rhythm and light. A generous entrance hall receives guests with calm authority, directing them toward the social zone - a layered sequence of living room, dining room, and library that opens continuously onto a deep wraparound terrace. The primary suite occupies its own wing: a bedroom of studied quietness, a bespoke walk-in wardrobe lit by a warm grid of LED coves set within dark bronze framing, and a private terrace framed by bougainvillea. A second suite with its own dressing zone completes the night side. The service core - with independent entry, staff quarters, and a fully equipped kitchen with island - operates invisibly yet fluidly within the whole.

Materials and climate
Girona limestone

Our studio grounded the interiors in a palette of materials native to Catalonia and the wider Mediterranean basin. Girona limestone appears across the bathroom floors and walls, its warm amber veining lending geological depth to spaces that might otherwise feel clinical. In the master bathroom, large-format stone slabs rise from floor to ceiling, joined by a freestanding concrete bath that sits like a sculptural object against the dramatic stone backdrop - an image of stillness and weight. Tactile contrast arrives through the slatted timber ceiling coves, referencing the volta catalana constructive tradition in a reinterpreted, contemporary register. Throughout the apartment, joinery is executed in dark smoked oak with bronze hardware, producing a material dialogue between shadow and warmth.
Bioclimatic strategy
Barcelona's Mediterranean climate - classified Csa, with hot dry summers reaching above 30 degrees and mild wet winters rarely below 8 degrees - shaped every passive design decision we made. The apartment's triple orientation allows cross-ventilation to flush accumulated heat on summer evenings without mechanical assistance. Exterior motorised blinds on all south and west glazing moderate solar gain during the critical afternoon hours of June through September, protecting interior thermal comfort while preserving the celebrated views. Thermal mass is exploited consciously: stone floors and solid limestone wall cladding absorb daytime heat and re-radiate it gently through winter nights, reducing heating demand during the mild cold season. The generous terrace perimeter - planted with bougainvillea, olive, and lavender - provides additional evaporative cooling and shade.

Energy and sustainability
CTE DB-HE
All works were executed in full compliance with the Spanish CTE DB-HE energy performance standard, with particular attention to the envelope insulation values and airtightness required under current regulations. Heating and cooling are managed by an aerothermal heat pump system, delivering both functions with a seasonal coefficient of performance well above the regulatory minimum. Hot water is pre-heated by a rooftop solar thermal collector integrated discreetly into the building's plant zone. Lighting throughout is 100 percent LED, with daylight-responsive dimming in the principal living spaces. Our studio targeted an energy consumption intensity that positions this residence well below the Barcelona residential average.
Landscape
The outdoor season in this latitude runs a full seven months - April through October - and we designed every terrace as a true extension of the interior program rather than an afterthought. Planted terrace perimeters carry bougainvillea in deep magenta and scarlet, cascading over balustrades and creating the living, chromatic boundaries that appear in the bedroom and living room views. A rattan hanging chair anchors the principal terrace as a contemplative counterpoint to the city panorama below. The planting palette draws exclusively on drought-tolerant Mediterranean species: bougainvillea, lavender, rosemary, and dwarf olive - all chosen for their low water demand and their deep resonance with the Catalan landscape.
Closing
In Sarria-Sant Gervasi, at the precise altitude where Barcelona exhales and the city noise softens into birdsong, we created a home where luxury is expressed not in volume or ornament, but in proportion, silence, and the quiet pleasure of materials that tell the truth.
